Côr Meibion Machynlleth is a group of men from Bro Ddyfi and the surrounding area who enjoy meeting up to sing and socialise. They are a fairly young choir, with most of the members between 20 and 40 years old. Most of them are farmers, but they also have a few teachers, builders and electricians in their midst … and one insurance guy! The choir was established in October 2014, with a view to compete at the 2015 Montgomeryshire and the Marches National Eisteddfod in Meifod, a local Eisteddfod for the choir. The choir was fortunate enough to be awarded second prize in the Male Voice Choir section at the 2015 Eisteddfod, and again at the 2016 National Eisteddfod in Abergavenny. This paved the way for a very special and successful year in 2017, winning the Male Voice Choir section in the Côr Cymru competition on S4C and being awarded first prize in the Male Voice Choir section at the National Eisteddfod in Anglesey. Other highlights in 2017 were singing the national anthems ahead of the Wales v New Zealand rugby international at the Principality Stadium, and featuring on Cefn Gwlad’s Christmas special on S4C. The choir will be singing at the London Welsh Festival of Male Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2018, and also performing at the Ontario Welsh Festival in Canada in April 2019. As well as competing and singing in prestigious concerts, the choir also enjoys organising small concerts locally and nationally. They practice every week at Machynlleth Community Church and if you happen to drive through Machynlleth on a Monday evening, you’ll probably see a long line of pick-ups parked along the street!
