For a nation such as Wales, during the centuries between the Act of Union of 1536 and the establishment of the Welsh Assembly in 1999, keeping alive its identity was to a great extent the realm of poets and songwriters. This unique compilation brings together a wide spectrum of songs and poems which express in one way or another the feelings of the Welsh people for their country. They include patriotic hymns and anthems, modern songs about heroes from Welsh history, songs which extol the virtues of the Welsh language and the people who speak it, and patriotic poems set to harp music in the cerdd dant tradition. And amongst the more traditional expressions are contemporary ones which take a more oblique view – such as Geraint Jarman’s tribute to Wales as the New Ethiopia, Twm Morys’ take on St. David’s advice to ‘take care of the little things’, and Mairi McInnes’ haunting song to the Spirit of the Gael, uniting Scottish and Welsh patriotism.
