Old favourites – jazz style This is the debut album by The RT Dixieband, which was formed back in 2013 by clarinetist and vocalist Rhys Taylor. When Rhys was just three years old he heard live jazz music for the first time, at the Cŵps tavern in Aberystwyth, by the ‘Coopers Jazz Band’, in which his father, Mike, played banjo. Having dreamed of forming his own jazz band for years, he ventured to form the band and since 2013 they have performed in all corners of Wales at festivals such as Tafwyl, Gwyl Nôl a ‘Mla’n, Tregaroc, the National Eisteddfod, on radio and television and at weddings and other functions and events. The high point so far would probably be the Brecon Jazz Festival in 2018. After a turbulent period for everyone, in 2021, Rhys decided to bring all band members together again to perform and record their first album. The band includes Rhys on clarinet and vocals, Gethin Liddington on trumpet, Gareth Roberts on trombone, Nigel Hart on piano, Paul Hillman on double bass and Paul Shepherd on drums and they all came together at Acapela Studio, Pentyrch, to record Rhys’ arrangements of jazzed up well-known Welsh and international songs and music. Classics such as ‘Panama’, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ and ‘Stranger on the Shore’ sit side by side an original song, which gives the album its title, ‘Gwena’ (Smile), and brand new, infectious arrangements of Welsh favourites such as ‘Moliannwn’ and the sea shanty ‘Rownd yr Horn’. Rhys dedicates this album, as a tribute, to all Welsh musicians, with special thanks to Gethin, Gareth, Nigel, Paul and Paul.

Hen Ffefrynnau mewn gwisg Jazz

Dyma albym cyntaf y band Jazz o Gymru a ffurfiwyd yn 2013 gan y clarinetydd a’r lleisydd Rhys Taylor. Yn dair oed clywodd Rhys Jazz byw am y tro cyntaf yn nhafarn y Cŵps, Aberystwyth, wrth wrando ar fandiau fel y ‘Coopers Jazz Band’, lle ’roedd ei dad, Mike, yn chwarae’r banjo. Breuddwydiodd Rhys am fedru gwneud rhywbeth tebyg, yn enwedig yn yr iaith Gymraeg, ac yn 2013 gwireddwyd y freuddwyd hon. Ers ffurfio’r band, maent wedi perfformio ledled y wlad, gan gynnwys gwyliau fel Tafwyl, Gwyl Nôl a ‘Mla’n, Tregaroc, Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru, ar deledu a radio ac mewn priodasau a phartîon. Efallai mai’r uchafbwynt hyd yn hyn yw agor Gŵyl Jazz Aberhonddu yn 2018.

Yn 2021, ar ôl deunaw mis digon heriol i holl gerddorion y wlad, penderfynodd Rhys ddod â’r band at ei gilydd i recordio albwm. Mae’r band yn cynnwys Rhys ar y clarinet a’r llais, Gethin Liddington ar y trwmped, Gareth Roberts ar y trombôn, Nigel Hart ar y piano, Paul Hillman ar y bas dwbl a Paul Shepherd ar y drymiau a daethant at ei gilydd yn Stiwdio Acapela, Pentyrch, i recordio trefniannau newydd sbon Rhys ei hunan o hen ffefrynnau Cymreig a rhyngwladol. Mae ‘Moliannwn’, ‘Lawr ar lan y môr’ a ‘Rownd yr Horn’ yn cael gwisg newydd sbon gan y band a chyfansoddiad gwreiddiol Rhys, ‘Gwena’, yn sicr o lonni’r galon. Ychwanegwch glasuron fel ‘Panama’, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ a Stranger on the Shore’ a dyma’r cynhwysion perffaith ar gyfer albym Jazz heb ei ail.

Meddai Rhys: “ Pleser pur oedd cael y band yn ôl yn yr un ystafell ar ôl cymaint o amser i berfformio a mwynhau gyda’i gilydd ac mae’r albwm hon yn deyrnged i holl gerddorion y wlad, gyda diolch arbennig i Gethin, Gareth, Nigel, Paul a Paul.”
