nansi-richards-queen-of-the-welsh-harp
Nansi Richards - Queen of the Welsh harp

Nansi Richards Jones, or Telynores Maldwyn (“the Harpist of Montgomeryshire”) as she was known, was undoubtedly the outstanding infl uence in the fi eld of traditional harp-playing in Wales during the 20th century.
She not only brought the harp - and especially the traditional Telyn Deires (“the Triple Harp”) - back into
prominence in Wales, but inspired a generation of young harpists to master the national instrument of Wales, and to discover the treasury of our traditional folk melodies. This CD brings together 40 tracks made of Nansi
Richards between 1947 and 1972, many of which have never been published before. The technical standard of some of these recordings are understandably defective, and some of the more recent recordings show some deterioration in the standard of playing due to Nansi’s failing eyesight, butthis is a unique collection of the work of a major fi gure in Welsh folk culture. We know that this collection, “warts and all”, will be greatly appreciated by all who have a feeling for music, and for the rich and diverse folk tradition which inspired
Nansi, and which she in turn presented with such enthusiasm to her audiences, and her many pupils. These
pupils have by now passed on her art to a new generation, and so the tradition continues.
DAFYDD IWAN

1 Pwt ar y Bys 2:16
2 Morfa’r Frenhines 1:20 Recordiwyd 1959 - BBC LP25589
3 Pant Corlan yr Wˆyn 3:24 Recordiwyd 1963 - BBC LP27994
4 Pibddaws Gwˆyr Wrecsam 0:38 Recordiwyd 1959 - BBC LP25589
5 Morfa Rhuddlan 2:33 Recordiwyd 1963 - BBC LP27944
6 Dŵr Glân 1:10
7 Pen Rhaw 2:22
8 Llydaw 1:00
9 Mathafarn 1:09
10 Ffi dl Ffadl 1:06
11 Cainc Dona 1:35
12 Pibddawns Rhif Wyth 1:12
13 Cwrw Melyn 0:38
14 Fairy Dance - Irish Reel 1:15
15 Melfyn 2:23
16 Wˆyres Megan 1:09
17 Moel yr Wyddfa 1:10
18 Codiad yr Ehedydd 1:59
19 Gwenynen Gwent 1:05
20 Cainc Iona 2:21
21 Gorhoffedd Gwˆyr Harlech 2:21
22 Cainc Ifan Ddall 0:58 Recordiwyd 1971 - Cambrian DCRC 331
23 Llwyn Onn yn null y Sipsiwn 1:02
24 Rhyd Ddu 0:48
25 Cainc William Nantgoch 0:30
26 Caerhun 1:04 Recordiwyd 1972 - Amgueddfa Werin Cymru 3698, Nansi Richards Telynores Maldwyn
BRENHINES Y DELYN Queen of the Welsh harp
27 Y Ferch o’r Sgêr 0:46 Recordiwyd 1966 - BBC (“Llafar Gwlad”) TBG 50648
28 Clychau Aberdyfi 1:51
29 Cainc Dafydd Broffwyd 1:16
30 Erddygan Caer Waun 2:02
31 Sir Watkin’s March 0:21
32 Cader Idris 1:47
33 Pibddawns Abertawe 1:13
34 Napoleon Crossing the Alps 0:38
35 Polca Saforella 0:50
36 Polca Llywelyn Alaw 0:11
37 Beibl Mam 1:57 Recordiwyd 1963 - Amgueddfa Werin Cymru 627
38 Castell Rhuthun 0:50 Recordiwyd 1959 - BBC LP25589
39 Pibddawns y Sipsi 1:19 Amrywiadau ar Pwt ar y Bys Recordiwyd 1954 - BBC LP22343
40 Costa’s Wedding 1:56 Recordiwyd 1971 - Iona Trevor-Jones
41 Nes Atat Ti 1:59 Recordiwyd 1973 - Iona Trevor-Jones
42 Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn 3:27 -Recordiwyd 1948 - Seremoni Bwrdeisdref Llanidloes
43 Y Gaeaf 2:38 - Recordiwyd 1947 - Eisteddfod Lewis, Lerpwl
44 Pwt ar y Bys 0:52
Deuawd ar yr un delyn gan
Nansi Richards ac Edith Evans, Telynores Eryri.
Recordiwyd 1972 - Iona Trevor-Jones
