Their first two records featured mainly new songs sung in close harmony accompanied by an exciting blend of guitar, mandolin and fiddle. Over the years, with regular performances on stage and TV, and tours of Brittany and Ireland, they have included more and more traditional Welsh songs in their repertoire. This LP is a selection of the best of these, arranged in a fresh and lively style. Most traditional Welsh songs express a haunting sadness, but on this record the accent is on the lively and light-hearted, with three jigs thrown in for good measure. They include three work songs, the black-smith (Migildi Magildi), the cow-boy (Cân Crwtyn y Gwartheg) and the shoe-maker (Y Cobler Du Bach), songs with catchy ‘nonsense’ refrains such as “Wrth Fynd efo Deio i Dywyn” and “Y Gelynnen”, and a good example of a round which is also a riddle, “Had Maip Môn”. Together, they provide refreshing proof of the popular revival which traditional songs enjoy in Wales to-day.

Side 1

Wrth Fynd efo Deio i Dywyn

Y ferch o blwy Penderyn

Fflat Huw Puw

Migildi Magildi

Pibgorn

Y G’lomen

Bwthyn Nain

Cân Crwtyn y Gwartheg

Side 2

Gwn Dafydd Ifan

Gorymdaith Gwŷr Dyfnaint

Y cobler du bach

Dacw ‘nghariad

Cân Huw Puw

Torth o fara

Y gelynnen

Castell coch

Had Maip Môn

(Song lyrics leaflet included in the LP)

1978

Side 1

1.Brother Eagle

2.Jenkins' history

3.The keeper

4.Newfoundland

5.Valley lights

6.Old men & children

Side 2

1.Mickey's song

2.Start & end with you

3.The sun's last rays

4.The old Carmarthen Oak

5.Fading away

6. Even though he was born and raised in the Welsh capital, his work represents the freedom of the country and his inspiration is drawn from Mother Nature. Inspired by solo artists who sing with string accompaniment such as Nick Drake, Dawel Disgyn presents mystical sounds of folk music with a modern twist. While Dawel Disgyn retains his smooth and drowsy signature tone, the EP further defines his acoustic sound, offering an intriguing and magical canvas. The EP offers two Welsh songs and two English, and one of the tracks is a remix of ‘Amser’ (Time). We are presented with the expected acoustic mix of guitar and banjo, but he also presents us to the cello, metalophone and glockenspiel. All the instrumentation are performed by the man himself with the notable exception of the contribution of Seb Goldfinch’s amazing talent on the violin and Lindsey Leven’s tender backing vocals. The effortless harmonies retain a dreamy quality and Gareth’s voice is rich yet tender and full of the blues. The Gentle Good is a favorite of Radio 1 presenter Huw Stephens, he said; “Gareth’s interest and love towards folk and acoustic music is very apparent from the first moment you hear his music. The music is pure and honest, eager to take you to another world whist at the same time totally comfortable in the world it exists.” He has performed in festivals such as Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau, the Eisteddfod, The Greenman Festival, In the City and South by Southwest. He self-released an EP in 2005, and later the same year featured on the Boobytrap Christmas compilation. The song Ciosg Talysarn was born in Cefn Coch, near Llanfair Caereinion, just hours before an unforgettable night at that place, when the wilderness of the earldom was at its height. Preparing for War was composed several weeks later, when the South Atlantic Corps Offensive was in tow. Dail y Teim was added because it's one of those simple-beautiful tones that insists on staying in the memory, and Lleucu Llwyd because it's one of Wales' most recent folk songs, and one of the tour's favourites. Its first performance at Aberystwyth on May 12st 1878 was warmly received, and by the summer of 1879 it was said that it had been performed some 50 times. In 1896 Joseph Parry proudly boasted that it had been staged some 500 times in Wales, England and America, and that parts of it had been sung many times more on eisteddfod and concert platforms during the same period.

Following the death of the composer in 1903 there was considerable debate among musicians of Wales as to its worth. Some believed that it has a colourful background, and that it consisted of sufficient melody to make half a dozen operas. This was a new experience for all opera enthusiasts, and an occasion on which all the views expressed by critics were either completely forgotten or conveniently disregarded. Heavyweight 180g Vinyl / Eco-freindly Vinyl, with obi-strip.

Welsh beatmaker Don Leisure has cemented his name as one of the most forward thinking and experimental beatmakers & producers within the current musical ecosystem. As well as being 50% of Darkhouse Family (alongside Earl Jeffers) he has collaborated with the likes of Angel Bat Dawid, Gruff Rhys, DJ Spinna and First Word label-mates Amanda Whiting & Tyler Daley (Children of Zeus). Garnering serious support from Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft, Huw Stephens, Gilles Peterson, Huey Morgan, The Vinyl Factory, Clash, Uncut and many more. A dedicated student of music, over the years Don has amassed a vast encyclopaedic knowledge of music genres and subcultures, including a fascination with Welsh psychedelic folk music from the mid-20th century. This introduction was made by respected musician, producer & selector Andy Votel’s 2005 two-part compilation series ‘Welsh Rare Beat’ (in collaboration with Gruff Rhys and Don Thomas), comprising twenty-five tracks from Sain Records’ back catalogue. Now the oldest independent record label in Wales, Sain is a wildly influential bastion of home-grown Welsh talent, co-founded by Welsh-language folk singer Dafydd Iwan, whose music has seen a cultural resurgence in recent years with his 1983 song Yma o Hyd (We’re Still Here) becoming a huge anthem for Wales football fans. Set up in the Welsh capital, many of Sain’s early releases were recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, but in the early 1970s the record company moved to the Caernarfon area and opened their first recording studio in 1974 near Llandwrog. Announcing a huge digitisation project throughout 2024, Sain Records took on the mammoth task of painstakingly digitising their entire back catalogue spanning 55 years, working in partnership with the National Library of Wales the resulting archive then be submitted for to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, preserving them for future generations to enjoy. Taking this period of rediscovery as an opportunity to reimagine their impressive inventory, Sain invited Don Leisure to dig into their musical treasure chest, creating a sprawling sonic tapestry from the dusty gems within. On this exhilarating excursion, Sain Records founder Dafydd Iwan explains: ‘Imagine someone gave you access to over 50 years of Welsh popular music – almost all of it unknown to you before. It would be a strange experience of discovery, an unknown territory which could baffle and excite. This happened to Jamal (Don Leisure) - and he was captivated by a world of music he barely knew existed, and when he was asked to distil the experience into one album, he immediately warmed to the idea. And this is the result - a kaleidoscope of sounds to encapsulate a half century of Welsh music. To call it unique would be superfluous: no-one could ever recreate this album. Listen, and enjoy.’.

The resulting product is ‘Tyrchu Sain' (translating to ‘Digging Sain’), a fearless and exploratory album, which sees Don put his signature unparalleled and unpredictable skills to work, weaving together moments of forgotten beauty into celestial and otherworldly compositions. The record features appearances by artists from Wales who have a similar obsession as Don Leisure in these classic Welsh rarities including Gruff Rhys, Carwyn Ellis, Earl Jeffers Amanda Whiting and Boy Azooga. First single ‘Cynnau Tân’ sees Don join forces with Carwyn Ellis on vocals (who has recently collaborated with Coco Maria as part his Rio 18 project, and whom Don calls “one of the most interesting voices in Welsh music today”) the duo take a trip down a sonic rabbit hole. With the English translation meaning ‘Light A Fire’, its smouldering 60’s tripped out atmospheres meld with delay-soaked, spiralling vocals and a hypnotic chord sequence to incredible effect. On the pair’s collaboration, Carwyn explains : “It’s been an absolute pleasure collaborating again with the Don. He contributed to our latest Rio 18 album, so it was nice to return the favour. His knowledge of old school Welsh records is obsessive, bordering on excessive!”. Seconds single ‘Tyrchu’ features the soft spoken vocal stylings of Gruff Rhys over a gently rolling, tape saturated and expertly chopped instrumental, creating (in Gruff’s own words) ‘Shiny new beat-treasures with ghostly reflections of Welsh pop’s past - skillfully dug from Sain Records’ deepest veins’. Jessy Allen, who lends her spinechilling vocals to album opener ‘Y Dechrau’ says: ‘Don’s album is a real gem, that honours and celebrates the past, whilst harnessing the future sound of Welsh Language Music. I am so excited for everyone to hear it.’

A shimmering patchwork quilt of sound, ‘Tychru Sain’ traverses a shifting landscape of acid folk, eerie vocal melodies and interstellar soundscapes, propelled forth by crisp, head nod inducing drums and grainy textures. Breathing new life into compositions lost to time, and paving a path for new listeners to discover the magic that lies within.

Track Listing:

01 - Y Dechrau (feat. Cardiff based Welsh bluegrass quartet, Taff Rapids, gives us an energetic version of the favourite 'Moliannwn', with a twist, while the ancient form of cerdd dant singing of poetry to harp accompaniment is represented in the enchanting harmony singing of Pedair on the track 'Blodau'r Cwm'.
