It has been a challenge but a very enjoyable one.” Having completed his musical studies at the Royal Northern College of Music and embarked on a career as a soloist, Steffan already has many accolades to his name, including two of the main prizes awarded at the National Eisteddfod of Wales – the Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize and the Towyn Roberts Scholarship – as well as the Kathleen Ferrier Bursary. He has also performed in operas with Welsh National Opera, alongside Bryn Terfel, and has performed a title role in ‘Brundibar’. The album was produced by Osian Huw Williams, who also contributed instrumentally to the album, together with Annette Bryn Parri on piano, Gruffydd Wyn on vocals, Dylan Cernyw on harp and vocal party Hogia Llanbobman. The album contains a vast rage of musical genres and the songs take us on a journey from the joyous to the plaintive through to the tender and powerful, through works by Schubert and Rossini to Welsh favourites by composers such as Gareth Glyn, Robat Arwyn and R S Hughes. The album’s track title is a Welsh version, by Caryl Bryn, of the song ‘Homeward Bound’. Through his assured and confident performance, his lyrical and emotive singing and the richness and maturity of his voice, this album confirms Steffan as one of Wales’ most impressive and talented young singers. Steffan dedicates this album in memory of his late mother, Susan Jane Owen. Catch Steffan performing live at the National Eisteddfod of Wales on the 4th of August and at Galeri Caernarfon on August 13th.

1 Shenandoah
2 Impossible Dream
3 Lisa Lân
4 All The Things You Are
5 Fy Nghartref Yn Y Wlad
6 If I Were A Rich Man
7 Llanrwst
8 Deh Vieni Alla Finestra
9 If Ever I Would Leave You
10 Where Is The Life That Late I Led?
11 Pan Fo’r Geiriau Wedi Gorffen
12 Au Fond Du Temple Saint
13 Some Enchanted Evening
14 Gwisg Fi’n Dy Gariad
15 Rhys
Traciau Bonws
16 Shenandoah – Cymraeg
17 Popeth Wyt Ti
18 My Little Welsh Home

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0679/4500/5350/products/scd2843b_37c41c21-8c44-457d-84ca-4454dc4bbd1d.jpg?v=1668673433
mae-na-olau
Mae 'na olau

Five years on from their first gig Pedair and Sain are proud to be able to share their first album – an album inspired by the current state of the world, the resilience of nature, the folk traditions of Wales and the simple virtues of friendship and hope. Their first recordings, having emerged during lockdown, in 2020, gained instant popularity, with their sweeping harmonies, fresh interpretations of the Welsh folk tradition, and intimacy of songwriting unexpectedly becoming a source of comfort and hope to many (including Pedair themselves!) The five songs recorded at home during lockdown are included on the album and the eight remaining new songs have developed and formed over the last year, all combining as an unified collection of folk and original songs in the Welsh language, displaying Pedair’s unique gifts as song-tellers and their deftness as songwriters. With new arrangements on harps, guitar, piano and accordion, they bring to life traditional material whilst at the same time form their own, new songs of experience. With musical contributions by Aled Wyn Hughes (bass) and Dafydd Hughes (drums and percussion) old and new come together to forge the unique voice of the female in the Wales of our time. A strong feeling of belonging and of Welsh identity flows through the album, with the title track, ‘Mae ’na Olau’, exploring the idea of a female hero saving our nation with her songs leading the way. In the same way the strong beats of ‘Iaith’ celebrates the fact that the Welsh language will continue to thrive and keep the heart of our nation beating for centuries to come, while ‘Dawns y Delyn’ is a mystical musical appreciation of the harp, its music, and a nation’s spiritual connection to the landscape. ‘Philomela’ is an ancient and very unusual Welsh folk song, full of references to the Greek Gods while describing the beauty of birdsong and also included on the album is a new arrangement of the sea shanty ‘Teg oedd yr Awel’, one of the many songs from the J Glyn Davies collection, and a song glorifying the most famous ship in the Welsh folk tradition, Fflat Huw Puw. ‘Siwgwr Gwyn’ is almost a contemporary lullaby while humour and the strong will of the Welsh woman are represented in ‘Cân y Sbif’ and ‘Marged Fwyn’ – the ‘sbif’ vows to never work again and Marged can break human bones, scare holiday makers, sort out the troubles of any parliament and light the way to freedom! The album was co-produced by Pedair and Aled Wyn Hughes. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Pedair from the beginning”, says Aled, “…their inventiveness and ability to bring together many different aspects and fragments of folk and traditional music into an accomplished unified whole is remarkable and rare.” In the same way Pedair have appreciated his subtlety, his attention to detail and all his musical advice whilst at the studio. By bringing together these new songs, recorded at Stiwdio Sain between September 2021 and April 2022, and the first songs recorded at home during lockdown (Cân Crwtyn y Gwartheg, Cân y Clo, Llon yr Wyf, Cân i Rhodri Dafydd a Saith Rhyfeddod), this album is a record of Pedair’s journey so far – a journey which thrives on collaboration and the thrill of live performance.

1 Teg oedd yr awel

2 Cân crwtyn y gwartheg

3 Cân y clo

4 Cân y sbif

5 Iaith

6 Philomela

7 Dawns y delyn

8 Siwgwr gwyn

9 Marged fwyn

10 Saith rhyfeddod

11 Cân i Rhodri Dafydd

12 Llon yr wyf

13 Mae 'na olau

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0679/4500/5350/products/scd2837b_6bb20cf4-cd3b-4eb4-a781-f96f5a41891b.jpg?v=1668673436
yma-o-hyd
Yma o Hyd

Wales’ best known folk group and singer team up for 21 memorable tracks including “Cerddwn Ymlaen” and “Yma o Hyd”. To me they also emphasise the love that is put into the land and the love that the land gives back. Having come to the fore several years ago as a young, fresh and extraordinary sophisticated musical talent, by now Kizzy is regarded as one of the most promient and exciting contemporary musicians of her generation. This album is a highly personal album, on so many levels. The whole album was recorded, produced and mixed by Kizzy at her home studio and she also plays every instrument. The songs, some composed several years ago and kept under wraps for a while, and others more recently composed, all reflect Kizzy’s inner journey from feeling lost to starting to understand and accept herself for who she is. A series of difficult and traumatic experiences led to a need for healing and sharing and through her music Kizzy has been able to find the freedom that comes with growth and confidence. Through her unique combination of Welsh language soul-funk jazz she takes us on a sincere and enthralling journey to a mindset with no boundaries and no barriers. Vocally and instrumentally experimenting with rhythm and melody her songs constantly succeed to break down conventions, always surprising and inspiring the listener, while also evoking a wide range of emotions. Having performed extensively in Wales and beyond, at festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival, Cheltenham Jazz, London Jazz Festival, Womex, Celtic Connections, Hay Festival, Lorient, Sŵn and Prince Edward Island Festival, Canada, Kizzy has alson been a guest artist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and has also supported Gruff Rhys. When Rhys was just three years old he heard live jazz music for the first time, at the Cŵps tavern in Aberystwyth, by the ‘Coopers Jazz Band’, in which his father, Mike, played banjo. Having dreamed of forming his own jazz band for years, he ventured to form the band and since 2013 they have performed in all corners of Wales at festivals such as Tafwyl, Gwyl Nôl a ‘Mla’n, Tregaroc, the National Eisteddfod, on radio and television and at weddings and other functions and events. The high point so far would probably be the Brecon Jazz Festival in 2018. After a turbulent period for everyone, in 2021, Rhys decided to bring all band members together again to perform and record their first album. The band includes Rhys on clarinet and vocals, Gethin Liddington on trumpet, Gareth Roberts on trombone, Nigel Hart on piano, Paul Hillman on double bass and Paul Shepherd on drums and they all came together at Acapela Studio, Pentyrch, to record Rhys’ arrangements of jazzed up well-known Welsh and international songs and music. Classics such as ‘Panama’, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ and ‘Stranger on the Shore’ sit side by side an original song, which gives the album its title, ‘Gwena’ (Smile), and brand new, infectious arrangements of Welsh favourites such as ‘Moliannwn’ and the sea shanty ‘Rownd yr Horn’. His grandparents, Now and Betty, introduced Dylan to so many of the greats of the popular music scene in Wales. As a child he spent many happy hours in their company listening to the likes of Dafydd Iwan and Hogia Llandegai, and those hours have been a definite boost for Dylan to start singing himself. He sang in a few pubs locally and in open mic competitions for a few years, but it was a year and a half ago that he started building his real audience and since then his popularity has gone from strength to strength.

Several songs on the album have been composed by Arfon Wyn, one who has been Dylan's backer and friend over the last year and a half, and the album's first song, ‘Dyddiau Gwell’, is a collaboration between the two and a song of hope in tumultuous days. ‘Ar yr un lôn’ is a brand new song by Tudur Huws Jones and convinces us that colour, status and position don't matter, as we all end up 'on the same lane'. 'Ty Coch Caerdydd' is a traditional ballad and in stark contrast there are also two English songs on the album, both of which are original songs by Arfon Wyn. Two special guests also join on the album, two singers who are very close to Dylan – his sister, Siân, joins on the duet ‘Y Gwydriaid Olaf, Dylan's own translation of the song 'Whiskey Lullaby', and Dylan's daughter Cari, who stars on the duet 'Canu yn codi calon’, a song that certainly succeeds in doing just that, and also features Dylan's son Aron on the tamborine.

Now, the opportunity came along to perform live again, and for Dylan, this was a great experience, as it was mainly through Cor-ona's facebook page that he had been connecting with his audience so far. The choir was formed in the village of Cwmbach, on the outskirts of Aberdare (with its own claim to be “The Queen of the Valleys”), and it was here, on 10th June 1921, that the musical story, and HERITAGE of this organisation was born. Since then, and over the last 100 years, the Choir has contributed to, and enhanced, the choral reputation of the locality, and has a proud place in the musical history of Wales. Cwmbach United Male Choir (so named on its formation in 1921 by the joining of five male voice parties in the village) quickly built up an enviable competition reputation, winning all the major eisteddfodau in Wales, including an unequalled three wins in consecutive years at the South Wales Miners’ Eisteddfod during the 1960’s. The Choir’s concert history, is equally impressive, ranging from principal concert halls across the UK, and in churches, chapels and other venues, sharing the stage with the likes of Sir Geraint Evans, Owain Arwel Hughes, Stuart Burrows, Harry Secombe and, on a memorable occasion, with Paul Robeson. It has performed across the whole of Europe and in Canada, USA and South Africa, and has made many sound recordings, radio and television appearances over the last 60 years. In celebrating its centenary, the Cwmbach Male Choir seeks to secure a sustainable future for the choristers and audiences of tomorrow and by safeguarding and building upon the unique HERITAGE, it will preserve its worth for generations to come. He graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2019 after completing his Masters degree with a full scholarship. On leaving the college he had numerous operatic roles under his belt, along with countless awards, including the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Scholarship, the James Martin Oncken Song Prize, the Drapers’ De Turckheim Scholarship, and in his final year he was awarded second prize in the prestigious Elizabeth Harwood Memorial Prize. Eisteddfodau have played an influential part in Ieuan’s upbringing and have greatly contributed to his love of singing and performing. From travelling to various local Eisteddfodau in order to make some pocket money while studying, to singing on the main pavilion stage at the National, each one has had an impact. He has had many successes over the years, including winning the Musical Theatre Category at the Urdd National Eisteddfod, which led to being selected as one of six finalists in the Bryn Terfel Scholarship. At the National Eisteddfod, Ieuan has won the Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize, the Wilbert Lloyd Roberts Scholarship, and in 2019 he reached the pinnacle by winning the W. Towyn Roberts Memorial Prize. Ieuan has already been extremely fortunate to perform at many exciting venues, such as the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, The Royal Albert Hall, and in 2018 he realised a dream when he shared the stage with Sir Bryn Terfel in the opening show of the National Eisteddfod at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. He has also performed outside the UK, in countries such as Norway, France, Italy, Canada and the USA. Ieuan is now embarking on a career in the music world with a desire to perform in opera, musical theatre and concerts throughout the world. The repertoire within this album reflects his versatility and his passion for various genres, and on occasion, his desire to cross genres, as you may see in some of the pieces on the album.

1 Shenandoah
2 Impossible Dream
3 Lisa Lân
4 All The Things You Are
5 Fy Nghartref Yn Y Wlad
6 If I Were A Rich Man
7 Llanrwst
8 Deh Vieni Alla Finestra
9 If Ever I Would Leave You
10 Where Is The Life That Late I Led?
11 Pan Fo’r Geiriau Wedi Gorffen
12 Au Fond Du Temple Saint
13 Some Enchanted Evening
14 Gwisg Fi’n Dy Gariad
15 Rhys

Traciau Bonws
16 Shenandoah – Cymraeg
17 Popeth Wyt Ti
18 My Little Welsh Home

Re-issue of the 1976 album by one of Wales’ most iconic voices. 1 Dŵr 2 Y Ffoadur 3 Mathonwy 4 Paid digaloni 5 Adfail 6 Daw dydd 7 Gwylliaid cochion Mawddwy 8 Sut fedrwch chi anghofio? Their first two records featured mainly new songs sung in close harmony accompanied by an exciting blend of guitar, mandolin and fiddle. Over the years, with regular performances on stage and TV, and tours of Brittany and Ireland, they have included more and more traditional Welsh songs in their repertoire. This LP is a selection of the best of these, arranged in a fresh and lively style. Most traditional Welsh songs express a haunting sadness, but on this record the accent is on the lively and light-hearted, with three jigs thrown in for good measure. They include three work songs, the black-smith (Migildi Magildi), the cow-boy (Cân Crwtyn y Gwartheg) and the shoe-maker (Y Cobler Du Bach), songs with catchy ‘nonsense’ refrains such as “Wrth Fynd efo Deio i Dywyn” and “Y Gelynnen”, and a good example of a round which is also a riddle, “Had Maip Môn”. Together, they provide refreshing proof of the popular revival which traditional songs enjoy in Wales to-day.

Side 1

Wrth Fynd efo Deio i Dywyn

Y ferch o blwy Penderyn

Fflat Huw Puw

Migildi Magildi

Pibgorn

Y G’lomen

Bwthyn Nain

Cân Crwtyn y Gwartheg

Side 2

Gwn Dafydd Ifan

Gorymdaith Gwŷr Dyfnaint

Y cobler du bach

Dacw ‘nghariad

Cân Huw Puw

Torth o fara

Y gelynnen

Castell coch

Had Maip Môn

(Song lyrics leaflet included in the LP)

1978

Daniel Sajko Daniel is originally from Newport, Pembrokeshire, but now lives in Old Colwyn and is a Music teacher at Ysgol John Bright, Llandudno. In Steve’s own words: “Only after composing numerous individual songs do I think which ones ‘relate’ to one another in terms of themes, nuance, and the feelings embedded in them. And that is how the content of each album becomes clear to me. I never set out to ‘create an album’ – only to compose songs. The compilation process comes after.” Steve is well known as one of the stalwarts of the Welsh music scene and has long established himself as a composer with an unquestionable talent to mould and marry lyrics perfectly to memorable tunes, and this album, once again, showcases this talent. As the title suggests, there is a tight hold on experiences, emotions and feelings, but they can also pull free and be dismembered. The title is derived from one of the songs on the album, ‘Ffair Wagedd’ (The Vainness Fair). As Steve explains in his analysis of the meaning of the title: “What ever the title means to you, well that’s the meaning. You will know better than me what the title means after you’ve listened to the songs. You unlock the door by listening – I don’t have a key. Of course, I have my own theories as well. Over the years I have noticed one particular pattern in life. In our hearts, we all hold tight onto the things we love – partners, love, babies, friends, mothers and fathers, dogs, good health, a tenderness, warm feelings, fun filled days, peaceful starry nights. And we have all felt the wrenching loss when these are lost, or pull free, or are pulled free from us, or release their hold on us. We all know this – and are bound to experience it sooner or later – it’s not complicated. But I understand and feel the pattern so much more after experiencing it many times. I think that many of the songs have arisen from these experiences, but it’s possible that others will understand the songs and title much better than me, as I have experienced before.” When Steve Eaves won the Special Contribution Prize in the BBC Radio Cymru Rock and Pop Awards in 2011, he said that he “liked to think … that his best work was yet to come”. The fact that he released his first album Viva la Revolucion Galesa! A wrestler, an entrepreneur and a family man. Gai Toms has composed a superb album that takes the listener on a sonic journey of Orig’s life, from the ‘golden pavements’ of Ysbyty Ifan to the rumbles in the Calabar jungle, Nigeria. Not only was Orig Williams a wrestler, he was also a member of the RAF, a talented footballer, an ambitious businessman, but most importantly, a loving family man with a burning passion for his homeland. “His autobiographies were an extravaganza of exciting stories; the songs effectively composed themselves!” – Gai Toms In the 80s, S4C was a brand new platform that invigorated popular culture in Wales, and during this period, Gai Toms became a fan of the show ‘Reslo’, and doted on the masterly El Bandito. “I remember going to see the ‘Reslo’ shows, and recall the crowd bellowing ‘El Bandito, El Bandito…’ at the top of their lungs as he entered the ring. There was an all-encompassing feeling in El Bandito’s company that he was a kind of hero, here to protect us.” The album doesn’t adhere to one single musical style – the colourful vitality of the diverse compositions evoke that of Orig’s own life. The instruments, ranging from the accordion, violin, and trumpet to the trombone and saxophone infuse a compelling sense of funk and flare to the work, with inklings of the distinctive zest of Welsh ‘Mexicana’ dispersed throughout the album. The stellar concept album is a sonic celebration of the life of a national legend. “Dad would be so proud, he had a penchant for words and poetry…” – Tara Bethan Orig often quoted famous poets, especially Cynan, and was incredibly fond of welsh poetry. This album celebrates that milestone in a way, and catches the essence of my voice at this time in my career through interpretations of the songs I’ve been singing in concerts over the years but as yet haven’t recorded. On my first album back in 2001 I received, with humility, this compliment from the then English National Opera Music Director Paul Daniel CBE “It is rare enough to find a true tenor voice, but even Scarcer is the singer who can use that instrument to communicate directly from his heart.” I have tried to be true to those kind words over the years, and I very much hope that this comes over in the performances on this album. Over the years I have had very special experiences of singing as a soloist in some of the most iconic buildings in the music world. Places such as the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, the Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall in New York and many more. But equally important to me is singing in small halls, and chapels all over Wales, receiving the warmest of Welsh welcomes that is so close to my heart. It is extremely appropriate, that the extraordinarily versatile and gifted musician, Brian Hughes, accompanies me on this album. In fact, what we have here is duets between piano and voice rather than a soloist and an accompanist. I have been extremely fortunate to have good teachers and coaches over the years, and I am extremely indebted to people like David Pollard, Gerald Martin Moore, Iris Dell’Acqua, Phillip Thomas, Antony Legge, Mark Shanahan and many more. But it is Brian Hughes who has been a constant over the years, and I feel the greatest privilege of having him as a teacher, a mentor and a friend to co-perform with me here. Thank you for buying this album, and I hope you will enjoy listening to how I am, absolutely (In Verità), at my happiest – singing! I would like to dedicate this compilation to my father Gwilym Meirion, to my wife Nia, my children Osian, Elan and Erin, and to the memory of my mother Catherine Jones and my sister Elen Meirion, in gratitude of their support and encouragement and for being my core inspiration in everything I do. Rhys Meirion June 2019 It was a great pleasure to work with Rhys on this CD; a CD which celebrates twenty years as a professional singer. During this time Rhys has developed into a likeable and popular character on national television as a presenter of musical programmes. But it’s Rhys the tenor that is heard here, and his innate virtues come to the fore in the songs; a warm appealing voice, intelligent phrasing, and the ability to caress the lyrics. We intended to record fifteen songs, but twenty four hours before recording we found ‘Gras Calvaria’ by E.T. Davies, and knew it had to be included. There’s a little of everything here; longing, hymns, patriotism, tenderness, a touch of the Mafia, and an Argentine Tango. Enjoy them all! Since releasing their previous album, the choir has continued to flourish. Côr y Strade is a very busy and active choir made up of 50 pupils aged between 11 and 18 years old. In 2009, the choir reached the semifinal round of S4C’s ‘Côr Cymru’ competition. This success was followed two years later in 2011 when they won the second prize in the Senior Children’s Choir competition at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod. In February 2014, the choir secured ‘Senior Runner-up’ position in the BBC School Choir of the Year competition and in April 2013 they won the second prize in the Pan Celtic Choral competition, Ireland. They won the second prize in the Royal Northern College of Music MACC Competition in 2015, and were awarded first prize in the ‘Lions Club Senior School Choir of the Year Competition’ both in 2015 and 2016. The choir has appeared on a number of Welsh language television programmes including Noson Lawen and Dechrau Canu, Dechrau Canmol and regularly support various local events, winning first prize at the Hendy Eisteddfod in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Also this year, the choir reached the final in the BBC’s new competition, ‘Songs of Praise Young Choir of the Year’. The choir enjoy travelling and spending time together, performing in St Michaels et Gudula’s Cathedral, Brussels, and recently returned from a successful tour of the Netherlands where they held a special concert in Edam Catholic Church, Amsterdam. The choir is very active in the community, raising funds for various local charities. In October 2013, they presented a cheque for £1750 to the Peony Breast Care Unit at the Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli. Both of their previous CDs, Cofio Ni and Mae’r Môr yn Faith, have been great successes, and I’m sure that you’ll enjoy this new album also. The choir is led by the school’s Head of Music, Mr Christopher Davies who is responsible for arranging many of the songs that make up their repertoire.
Geoff Evans, Headteacher

Galw enw’r Iesu

Prydferth waredwr

Gwlith ar galon wag

Mi burrito cordobes

Fel yr hydd a fref am do

Eryr Pengwerdn

Hebddo ti

Mary did you know?

Carol Mair

Nawr dy fod yn agos

Don’t stop believing

Hyfrydol

Lleuwen returns with her most rooted and experimental album to date. Twisting ancient hymns to her own compositions Gwn Glân Beibl Budr Clean Gun Dirty Bible takes the Welsh hymn book and throws it into the Age of Misinformation. Live, raw and often improvised, Lleuwen has brought together an extremely varied mix of musicians including traditional triple harpist Llio Rhydderch, jazz pianist Neil Cowley, classical tenor Rhys Meirion and brothers Aled and Dafydd Hughes of alt-rock-country band, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog. Musically and lyrically, Gwn Glân Beibl Budr explores polar opposites: addiction and spirituality; violent guitar strumming with angelic vocals; disconnection in the era of connectivity; historical amnesia. Crashing drums play the role of a beast of prey with the harp playing the role of a young seedling. Songs about urbanism and shrinking rural areas; road traffic, phone traffic, mind traffic. A post-Brexit song about the return of Bendigeidfran from the Mabinogion (the oldest prose stories of Britain) asking him lie across the the sea to bridge the gap between Britain and Europe. This is the first album in which Lleuwen has provided detailed translations for her songs. “Many of the songs on this record talk of bridges and my translations could be bridges for those who don’t know Welsh. Barriers are made to be broken. And that includes language barriers.” Her translations reflect the lyrical intensity of this bold new album. Athena sincerely hope that Encore will bring much enjoyment to their already supportive audience and that it will capture the attention of listeners far and wide.

Nella Fantasia

Bassey Medley (Diamonds Are Forever/Goldfinger/Kiss Me Honey Honey/I Am What I Am)

Calon Lân

O Mio Babbino Caro

Mil Harddach Wyt

Somewhere Only We Know

Ave Maria

Wrth I’r Afon Gwrdd A’r Lli

Bridge Over Troubled Water (+ Steffan Lloyd Owen)

Moon River

Carol Y Gannwyll

O Holy Night

‘Yr Hwntws’ (meaning – The South Walians) are a folk band from South Wales. Their repertoire includes traditional songs and tunes that originate from Glamorgan and Gwent. The songs are sung in an ancient dialect known as “Gwenhwysig” or “Gwentian.” “Yr Hwntws” is made up of Gregg Lynn (vocals and guitar), Nia Lynn (vocals, percussion), Bernie KilBride (fiddle), Imogen O’Rourke (flute and vocals), Dan B. James (guitar and mandocello) and Dean Ryan (double bass, bass guitar). Gregg Lynn founded the band in the early 1980s and over the years they have toured extensively in Europe as well as appearing on BBC, S4C and Radio Cymru. During the last few months Gregg has spent hours of his time researching old Welsh manuscripts and songbooks at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth collecting examples of the unique “Triban Morgannwg” poetic form. The old poets and singers used the tribans as a means of con-veying stories about ordinary people – they are funny, sad, irreverent and punchy. The musicians infused the poetry with symphonies (short refrains of varying lengths) between the lines which were sung. History notes that the tribans were sung by ox drivers as a way of motivating the oxen whilst ploughing. They would also shout chants like MAHO! (Onwards!) Yr Hwntws continue to develop the tribans in this way – highlighting the musical and lyrical with as much punch as ever. Their new album ‘Y Tribanwr’ (the triban man) is a collection of over 70 tribans assembled and ar-ranged to traditional songs and tunes by Nia Lynn and Bernie Killbride. ‘Y Tribanwr’ was recorded at Felin Fach studio, Abergavenny with Dylan Fowler engineering and Nia Lynn producing. ‘Yr Hwntws’ have a short tour coming up and will celebrate the release of the album with a performance at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, September 28th – the album will be re-leased the same day.

Ym Mhontypridd mae 'Nghariad

Aradwr a'i Ychen

Bro Morgannwg

Cymeriadau / Alaw Triban

Y Mwlsyn

Y Folantein / Y Bibddawns Gymreig

Hannar Cnap

Tribannau Priodasau / Y Lili

Ffarwel i Dai'r Cantwr

Adar Di-Ofal / Alaw Pontypridd

Tribannau Ifan Bifan

Diawledig a Nefolaidd / Pibddawns Gwŷr Wrecsam

Y Coliar

Côr Meibion Machynlleth is a group of men from Bro Ddyfi and the surrounding area who enjoy meeting up to sing and socialise. Credited for their sparkling melodies, foot tapping tunes and spirited and energetic performances of Welsh step dancing, they’ve taken Welsh traditional music to international audiences. Following the release of their debut album, Bling in 2008, which attracted four star responses from the critics, the five piece have played to big audiences and rave reviews at concerts and festivals around Britain, USA, Australia and Europe. It hasn’t always been plain sailing for the band, there have been a few hicccups along the way, the biggest crisis being Sam and Patrick’s night in a cell at Chicago O’Hare Airport and their deportation back to the UK the following day! Highlights include performing at the Royal Albert Hall with Bryn Terfel and Sting, singing in the rain at the Borneo Rainforest Festival and performing to 25,000 people at the coveted Cropredy Folk Festival. They’ve toured Italy, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Australia and the USA and have performed several times at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Brittany, where they’ve received the award for the best group. They’ve released three further studio albums – Jonah, Dinas and Solomon. Its members, Manon Steffan Ros and Elwyn Williams, recorded these songs in Stiwdio Iawn, Aberystwyth, over a period of a few years, and the intimate, low-fi sound was important to them when recording, giving the impression of a live performance. “It sounds very personal, as though the band is there with the listener. There are a few faint background noises- there is a song with the cry of a seagull, and another which features the lovely melodic sigh of Greta, Elwyn’s little girl!’ The band combines folk and country influences, and all songs are written by Manon, with the exception of Ddoi Di Dei, which is a traditional folk song that was sung to Manon by her mother. Themes include the trickle of time, and there are many songs that feature water- the sea, lakes and rivers of Wales. “The album title- Llifo Fel Oed, or Flows Like Age- comes from the final track, Plant Bach. It’s a song about how our children grow and the older generation dies, but nothing really dies- we are all part of a bigger circle. We become our forefathers, and love and the land and the seas all flow like age.” Track notes: Marchlyn- Marchlyn is a farm that is close to the river Dyfi in mid Wales. The song was written after Manon found an old photograph in her grandparents’ collection, showing a young woman outisde the farmhouse. On the back was written “Marchlyn”, and the family’s connection to the farm is unknown. Marchlyn is a love song, asking, What did you see between Marchlyn and Dyfi that was so much better than me? Fy Mhader I- A loving hymn to an atheist. This is my prayer and it belongs to you. Pan O’n I’n Fach- Written when Manon’s nephew was born, this is a celebration of a moment when she first listened to his breathing over an international phone line. The sound of your breath reminds me of a song my mam used to sing when I was little. The song mentioned was Ddoi Di Dei, a traditional song also included on this album. Sarah- A song about a ship built in Aberdyfi at the beginning of the 20th century, and the jealousy felt by the lover of a sailor for this beautiful schooner. This ship was also the subject of a chapter of Manon’s novel, Llanw. Ddoi Di Dei- This traditional Welsh song asks, Who plants the wild flowers? Dwylo Iesu Grist- A love song using spiritual imagery. You have such faithful eyes, like Jesus in stained glass. Nos Da- A lullaby that Manon wrote when her sons were babies. “I’d better say goodnight, although I will miss you.” Pan Ei Di- A love song about trying not to lose your head when you’re old enough to know better. We’re too old to exchange such a smile. Cân Mered- This is a song in memory of the singer and collector of folk songs, Meredydd Evans, who died in February 2015 and left an amazing legacy of songs, spirit and kindness. May I hear the last lullaby before the last melody takes you home? Llyn Cwm Dulyn- Llyn Cwm Dulyn is a lake amongst mountains in a secluded spot in Snowdonia. It is an area known for its myths and legends, particularly about the tylwyth teg. This is a love song which implores, Take me to Llyn Cwm Dulyn, where the myths are all true. Plant Bach- A song about watching children grow, and the magic of dens, the rhythm of a football pounding a wall, and little plastic Lego men. This collection shows how his hymns lend themselves to all styles of singing, and the natural simplicity of his work means that his hymns are constantly revisited, and as shown by tracks 2 and 14, are sometimes combined with verses by other authors.
Dafydd Iwan

Gwyn a Gwridog, Hawddgar Iawn - CÔR Y BRYTHONIAID

Disgyn Iesu o’th Gynteddoedd - ALED WYN DAVIES

O Nefol Addfwyn Oen - CÔR RHUTHUN

Mi Dafla Maich Oddi ar Fy Ngwar - CYMANFA CORAU UNEDIG YNYS MÔN

Arglwydd, Arwain Trwy'r Anialwch - MARY LLOYD-DAVIES

Yn Eden, Cofiaf Hynny Fyth - CANTORION COLIN JONES

Iesu, Iesu, Rwyt ti'n Ddigon - CÔR SEIRIOL

Y Cysur i Gyd - D. Towards the late 60s Wales saw a flurry of enthusiasm and vibrance on the Welsh pop scene but what was most surprising was the emergence of so many new groups – and those being predominantly female groups – adding their own unique sound to popular, contemporary songs. Some of the artists on this album are still singing, recording and performing, others have moved on and sadly some are no longer with us, but what we do have is an album that once again brings songs and artists from that prolific musical decade in Wales back into the limelight so that a new generation can listen and enjoy the original recordings on CD. Put simply what ties this collection together is the sheer feeling and emotion in the voices, the variety and style of the songs and the innate way they convey that passion and enjoyment to the audience.

Hen Gyfrinach - ROSALIND LLOYD

Nôl Ataf Fi - JANET HUMPHREYS

Watshia Di Dy Hun - MEINIR LLOYD

Cymylau - SIDAN

Swcw, Swcw - TANNAU TAWELA

Blodau'r Grug - EIRLYS PARRI

Penblwydd Hapus - EVELYN BRIDGER

Heulwen Mai - SWYN

Bydd Hon yn Ddigon - ANN MORRIS

La, La, La - Y PERLAU

Englynion - Y PELYDRAU

Y Gusan Gyntaf - Y MELINWYR

Y Storm - DOREEN DAVIES (Lewis)

Hyfryd Wlad Pen Llŷn - GWENANN

Mae'r Oriau'n Hir - ELERI LLWYD

Rhowch i Mi Eiriau - MARI GRIFFITH

John Alfred - Y DILIAU

O Fewn fy Nghalon i - HELEN WYN A HEBOGIAID Y NOS

Rhaid i'r Plant - HEATHER JONES

Trên Bach - Y TLYSAU

Côr Rhuthun is a mixed voice choir of some 50 voices from Ruthun in north Wales. The acclaimed musician Robat Arwyn is the choir’s musical director and conductor, also the composer of many of the choir’s songs and works. The choir was formed as a youth choir in 1981 by the late Morfydd Vaughan-Evans, to compete in the Urdd Eisteddfod. She was twice honoured by the Gorsedd of Bards, first with the green robe and then, in the National Eisteddfod in Newport in 2004, with the white robe. There have been many television and radio appearances over the years, and the choir has released 8 records and CDs. Their repertoire currently features songs and pieces by contemporary Welsh composers such as Karl Jenkins and Richard Vaughan and Patagonian Héctor Macdonald. Choir highlights include an invitation to perform at the Ontario Welsh Festival in Canada in 2015; performing and recording Robat Arwyn’s commission work at the National Eisteddfod 2001 – Atgof o’r Sêr (Memory of Stars) – with world-renowned baritone Bryn Terfel and soprano Fflur Wyn. At the Denbighshire National Eisteddfod in 2013, the choir was a key element of the sell-out opening concert Caneuon Robat Arwyn. The choir is proud of its continuing association with former member Rhys Meirion, now an international operatic tenor and the success of Blue Riband winner Meirion Wyn Jones, baritone, the soprano soloist Kate Griffiths and the young tenor, Elis Jones – all three valued members of the choir who have contributed to this recording.

Daeth Crist i'n Plith

Hwiangerdd Mair

Ar Gyfer Heddiw'r Bore

Lower Lights

Seren Bethle'm

Ganol Gaeaf Noethlwm

Veni Immanuel

I Fethlehem

Sêr y Nadolig

Gŵyl y Baban

O Dawel Ddinas Bethlehem

Mater Christi

Troyte's Chant

Wele, Cawsom y Meseia

Mae'r Sêr yn Canu

Welsh harpist Gwenllian Llŷr is quickly gaining international recognition for her charismatic and engaging performances. In July 2013, Gwenllian was a prize-winner at the USA International Harp Competition in Bloomington where she was highly praised for her musicianship and her ability to connect with audiences. She has also won many prizes more locally, including the First Prize of the UK Camac Harp Competition in 2010, the Nansi Richards Scholarship and the Blue Ribbon at the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol in Wales in 2012. Gwenllian’s career has taken her across the globe with performances in prestigious venues alongside renowned artists, including Rebecca Evans, Imogen Cooper, Al Jarreau, Matthew Rees and Bryn Terfel. She is becoming increasingly in demand as a soloist with orchestras, enabling her to demonstrate the wide-range of harp music to more audiences. Gwenllian was invited to be guest soloist with Côrdydd as they took to the stage of Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, and she relished the opportunity to share the music of Welsh composers in this prestigious venue. She has also recently performed the fiery and percussive Concerto by Ginastera with the Milton Keynes Sinfonia, the elegant and much-loved flute and harp Concerto by Mozart alongside Shirley Barningham with the Hallgate Chamber Orchestra, as well as the colourful and contrasting Danses by Debussy with the Orchestra of St. John’s. Gwenllian has had the pleasure of studying with wonderful teachers in some of the best institutions across the world, with degrees from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, The Juilliard School and the Royal Academy of Music. In addition to substantial financial support from scholarships and grants, Gwenllian also received many accolades during her studies, including the William Schuman prize for outstanding achievement and leadership in music from The Juilliard School. Her studies afforded her with fantastic opportunities to work with other musicians and artists, to develop her love of chamber music as well as expanding the harp repertoire. An avid proponent of new music, Gwenllian has worked with many composers over the past decade, helping musicians and audiences to understand the versatility of the harp and culminating in many world premieres. During her final year at The Juilliard School, Gwenllian worked with composer Sayo Kosugi and dancer and choreographer Eve Jacobs in the performance of Nebula, Blooming for harp and dance. She has also worked on new chamber music with composition students at Cardiff University, first with flautist Lisa Nelsen in the project Music is Fragile?, culminating in a premier at the National Museum in Cardiff amidst the ceramic pieces which inspired the compositions, and then with soprano Sarah Dacey in the project Coma Notes, with a premiere in Cardiff University alongside poet James Nash. Gwenllian’s love of the harp extends beyond the stage, both as a teacher and as a composer. Alongside her busy performing career, Gwenllian teaches privately, on music courses, and at the Latymer Saturday Music Centre and King’s College London. In addition, she has recently joined the charity Live Music Now, founded by Yehudi Menuhin, which works with a diverse range of people who rarely have access to live music. For nearly 50 years he has created an enormously varied body of work, ranging from the light, popular in style, to the substantial, challenging output on a large scale. Furthermore, it is no exaggeration to say that he has created pieces that are, and will, be regarded as classics for many years to come – Llanrwst, Carol y Seren and Iesu Yw to name but three. We could regard this disc as Gareth’s musical journey as a composer, from his student days to the present – excellent examples of his skill for setting words, clothed in the most loving and sensitive melodies and harmonies. Undoubtedly one feels the presence of his late father (the National Eisteddfod crown-winning bard T. Glynne Davies) in his instinctive consciousness of words and their sounds, resulting in a most intimate relationship which is such a pleasure for singers. And it is this flair for words embraced in sound that is Gareth’s strength: an ability to compose music that enriches the listener’s experience of the poetry. Despite the unquestionable craftsmanship of his work – the fine structural sense and skilful treatment of motifs and themes – the technique never overwhelms the content and never impedes the aim of creating enjoyment. An obvious question to ask is this: how ‘Welsh’ is Gareth’s musical style? Naturally it takes more than a descriptive title or the language that is being set for music to be considered ‘nationalistic’, but in my opinion Gareth’s residency on the Isle of Anglesey has deepened his Welshness, and has greatly influenced his musical voice. Without doubt the sounds of Anglesey’s coastline pervade his works, whilst magical and mystical locations such as Llanddwyn, Malltraeth and Penmon have sunk deeply into his very being. Further proof of this can be heard in one of his most important extended works, Dirion Dir (two excerpts from which can be heard on this disc – Llys Aberffraw and Brodyr Maeth Hywel), where musical pictures of Anglesey along the ages come alive through the composer’s vivid imagination and masterly portraits. Despite this, Gareth is no islander in the narrow sense. He is indeed a national treasure. Undoubtedly he is one of the most important Welsh composers of our time.

Anglesey – Ynys Môn in Welsh – has contributed vastly to the variety and wealth of contemporary Welsh entertainment, and it continues to do so.
