ANWELEDIG - SOMBREROS YN Y GLAW
The Blaenau Ffestiniog group’s first masterpiece.
Being able to identify a group is always a good test and one which Anweledig certainly pass despite producing a diverse offering on their CD ‘Sombreros yn y Glaw’. The nine member band from Blaenau Ffestiniog area come up with an interesting and diverse collection of songs.
The opening track, Merch Coffi sounds like a jazzed up version of the stereo MCs. Yet cleverly, the style of the song changes as it goes along. This technique is again adopted on Eisteddfod, the track beginning as a sultry laid back ballad before developing into a Caribbean calypso style. Some comedy is bought into the track as the lyrics are rather jauntily shouted over the background music. Meanwhile touches of Indian music blend into the song’s dub mix version. Touches of humour are also to be found on Mr Hufen Ia and Madarchol. The latter, more bluesy than most of the songs, is a catchy tune which has the capacity to grow on you.
This won’t be to everyone’s taste but certainly gives Anweledig a unique and recognisable style.
