IONA & ANDY
For over 25 years the married couple from Arfon, Iona and Andy have entertained audiences all over the world, with their wide repertoire of country singing.
Born in Nantlle, Iona went to the Normal College, Bangor to train as a teacher before working at Glanwydden Primary School, Waunfawr and then at Eglwysbach.
She always sang in her spare time, and that’s how she met Andy from Penmaenmawr. Andy graduated in French from Bangor University, and has worked as trainee manager for Lewis’ at Liverpool, a Boutique Manager at Llandudno and as Relief Manager for Mecca Bookmaker.
They met while singing at the old Glanrafon in Bangor, and got married in 1980. From then on they travelled land and sea singing as a duet, and in the early years they travelled up to 35 thousand miles a year around the British Isles, Europe and North America.
Having won a host of Country Singing prizes throughout Britain, and nominated several times as Best Country Singer and Best Duet , they won the most popular Country Duet in the British Country Awards 1987.
In 1991 they sang at the Arena Wembley in London in the Country Singing Festival, with Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynnette and Crystal Gail Whitman.
After travelling non-stop for 15 years the duet had a record contract with SAIN, which gave them the chance to work more in Wales, and for Iona to sing in her mother tongue, and for Andy who is working to be completely fluent in Welsh.
Iona and Andy were the founders of Llandudno’s Country Singing Festival, where renowned Country Singers are invited from all over the world to sing annually.
The highlight of their career was to sing in Welsh at the Grand Ole Oprey at Nashville, on a live programme broadcast across America!
Their book ‘Llwybrau Breuddwydion’ published by Gwasg Gomer recounts Iona and Andy’s lifetime in country music.
