DEWI ELLIS JONES
Dewi Ellis Jones comes from Llanfairpwll, Anglesey. Dewi started playing percussion at a very early age, on saucepans at his grandparents’ house, until he was given his first drum kit. He was so fanatical about playing drums and percussion that he started orchestral percussion lessons with Dr Peter Flinn. Since then all he wanted to do was to be a percussionist. He graduated with BMus (Hons) from the University of Wales, Bangor in 2001 followed by an MA degree in performance, and an LRSM diploma.
He is currently working towards a Doctorate in performance and composition, studying with Simone Rebello and Dr Pwyll ap Siôn. This is the first performance PhD ever undertaken at the University of Wales. He is also working towards the FRSM diploma. Dewi currently works as a free-lance percussionist/soloist playing with several orchestras and bands, and has made numerous solo television appearances. He has deputised for the acclaimed Backbeat Percussion Quartet and has performed with them at several venues including a concert tour of Switzerland. He has appeared many times as guest soloist with Beaumaris Band.
He is a tutor at the William Mathias Music Centre and teaches Percussion at the University of Wales, Bangor. Dewi is also a keen composer; in 2001 he was awarded many prizes and awards including The Grace Williams Memorial Prize for Composition at the Urdd Festival, and gained sponsorship from S4C. He was chosen as one of the composition adjudicators for the National Eisteddfod of Wales 2005.
