Liam & Scott – brothers from Resolven started a band ‘Salic Law’ when at boarding school in Hereford in 1976 (Belmont Abbey) with Alun Morgan – the original Crys lead guitarist. They performed a number of pub/club gigs in the Neath/Swansea area and developed a good following. Both wrote most of the music and lyrics and still do today.
The break into the Welsh music scene came when supporting a band called ‘Trobwll’ in Ystradgynlais. Gary Melville and Geraint Williams offered the band a single if they kept the music but put Welsh lyrics to the songs – only Liam & Scott were Welsh speakers. Cadw Symud/Lan yn y Gogledd was released in 1980 and Crys were on the way – it featured the keyboard player, Verden Allen, who played with Mott the Hoople. David Bowie wrote the song All The Young Dudes on the keyboards Verden played on the Crys single. The song was recorded at Pete Kings studio in Swansea, Pete was also the guitarist on the Lost in France no 1 single by Bonnie Tyler. A copy of the single has since sold on ebay for £180 and the vinyl albums also appear regularly on the site for sale.
More radio/TV work came very quickly (Seren 1 and 2, Ser, Sosban, Yr Awr Fawr etc) that led to securing 2 recording deals with Sain; Rhyfelwr and Tymor yr Heliwr – both won the Sgrech best album of the year award. Crys about this time had a Radio 1 session on the Tommy Vance Friday Rock Show – they performed 4 songs, 2 Welsh, 2 English – they were the first Welsh band to get coverage for Welsh language music on this show. The third album/CD was recorded with Flach in 1995 – Crys Roc Cafe.
They built a very loyal fan base who called themselves the Pendoncwyr – a ‘new’ Welsh word that now appears in one of the welsh dictionaries. Since the mid 80s things slowed down a bit because of careers etc, Alun Morgan also moved to live in Canada. However, Crys performed one of Arfon Haynes Davies’ favourite songs when he was surprised on the Penblwydd Hapus show on S4C and performed at the Faenol festival about 3 years ago along with a TV appearane on ‘Heno’ when Alun Morgan returned from Canada for a few weeks.
Recently there has been renewed interest because of the release of ‘The Best of CD’ and the new song Sgrech – Liam & Scott have been on Radio Cymru (Sian Thomas, Richard Rees, C2 Kevin Davies) and on Wedi 7. This revival has beena bit of surprise to the band but great news to know fans still exist and want to hear Crys’ music.
