Alun Jones, brought up in the Tryweryn Valley at the foot of Arennig Fawr, lived in Bala, and was one of the outstanding bass singers of his generation, with an extraordinary lower register. He won the chief bass solo competition in the National Eisteddfod of Wales on seven occasions before achieving the ultimate prize of the Blue Riband at Porthmadog in 1987. He died of cancer at the height of his singing prowess, having recorded only one album.
For many years, he was one of the regular soloists with Eirian Owen’s male ensemble Côr Godre’r Aran, and the choir joins him on the last track of his album, I’se weary of waitin’. He toured many countries with several choirs, taking him to the USA and Australia, Germany, Denmark, Nigeria, Brittany and Holland.
